Why We Talk About Hydration So Much
(Especially During a Texas Summer)
If you’ve ever been to Sequence, you’ve probably heard one of us ask,
“How much water are you drinking?”
It’s one of the simplest questions we ask, but it can make a huge difference in how your body feels.
During a Texas summer, it’s easy to lose more water than you realize. Whether you’re working outside, chasing kids around the neighborhood, spending the day at the ball fields, or just walking from your car into the grocery store (because let’s be honest—that Texas heat is no joke), your body is constantly trying to keep you cool by sweating.
The problem is, you’re not just losing water.
You’re also losing important minerals called electrolytes, and those play a huge role in how your muscles, joints, and nervous system function.
Water Is Important… But So Are Minerals
Most people know they should drink more water, but hydration is about more than just filling up your water bottle.
When you sweat, your body loses minerals like sodium, potassium, magnesium, and calcium. These electrolytes help your body do everything from sending nerve signals to helping your muscles contract and keeping your cells properly hydrated.
Think of water as the vehicle—but electrolytes are what help get that water where it needs to go.
Without enough of both, your body has to work a little harder.
Signs Your Body Might Need a Little Extra Support
Sometimes dehydration doesn’t show up as extreme thirst.
Instead, you might notice things like:
• Afternoon fatigue
• Muscle cramps or tight muscles
• Headaches
• Feeling dizzy when you stand up
• Brain fog
• Low energy
• Feeling like you just can’t recover after a workout
There are lots of reasons these things can happen, but during the summer, dehydration and low electrolytes are definitely worth considering.
Why This Matters Here in Texas
Living in Texas means we sweat…a lot.
Even if you don’t think you’ve been exercising, spending time outside can quickly lead to fluid and mineral loss.
And if you’re active, work outdoors, enjoy weekend projects, have kids in summer sports, or spend your weekends at the beach or on the boat, you’re probably losing even more than you realize.
That’s why we encourage our patients to think beyond just drinking more water.
A Few Simple Ways to Stay Hydrated
Hydration doesn’t have to be complicated.
A few small habits can make a big difference.
✔ Carry a water bottle and sip throughout the day instead of waiting until you’re thirsty.
✔ If you’ve been sweating a lot, replace those lost electrolytes—not just the water.
✔ Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables. Watermelon, cucumbers, berries, citrus, and leafy greens are all great choices.
✔ Consider adding a quality electrolyte supplement when you’re spending long periods in the heat. Look for one without a lot of added sugar or artificial ingredients.
Your Nervous System Loves Hydration Too
As chiropractors, we spend a lot of time talking about the nervous system because it controls every function in your body.
Your muscles, joints, and nerves all depend on proper hydration to work efficiently.
When your body is well hydrated and getting the minerals it needs, it’s simply better equipped to adapt to stress, recover from activity, and keep you feeling your best.
Hydration isn’t a cure-all—but it’s one of those foundational habits that supports just about everything else you’re doing for your health.
Small Habits Add Up
At Sequence, we’re not about perfection.
We’re about building healthy habits that fit into your everyday life.
Maybe that looks like keeping a reusable water bottle in your car.
Maybe it’s adding electrolytes after working in the yard.
Maybe it’s choosing watermelon instead of chips for an afternoon snack.
Small choices, repeated consistently, often have the biggest impact.
So as we head into another Texas summer, here’s your friendly reminder to take care of yourself.
Drink your water.
Replace your minerals.
Take care of your body.
It works hard for you every single day—and it deserves the support.
We hope you have a safe, healthy, and hydrated summer!
💧 Dr. Shanleigh’s Pro Tip
If you’ve been outside for an hour or more—whether you’re at the beach, on the baseball fields, working in the yard, out on the boat, or simply enjoying a Texas summer day—don’t just reach for another bottle of water.
Try pairing your water with a quality electrolyte source and a snack that contains protein or healthy fats, like Greek yogurt, a handful of nuts, cheese, or a boiled egg. Electrolytes help your body use and retain the water you’re drinking, while protein and healthy fats provide lasting energy and support recovery.
One of my favorite reminders is this:
Hydration isn’t just about drinking more water—it’s about giving your body what it needs to actually use that water well.
Your body works hard for you every day. A little extra support goes a long way, especially during a Texas summer.
Stay safe, stay cool, and stay hydrated!
